Hotel review

What to know before going to Goshen, NY

#GHGetaways is a travel series that highlights budget vacation destinations across the United States that the whole family will love.

As the mother of a LEGO-obsessed six-year-old who also has her own healthy love for theme parks, I had planned the opening of the LEGOLAND New York Complex for a while (it was originally scheduled to debut in the summer of 2020, but the pandemic had other plans).

So, once the park finally – and officially – opened on July 9, 2021, we quickly booked our tickets. In short, the whole experience was a great success with my son. So much so that as soon as we got home he immediately started asking me if we could go back – and this time stay at the LEGOLAND Hotel. So when Merlin Entertainment, the parent company of LEGOLAND, contacted us and offered to host us for the hotel grand opening in early August, I immediately said yes and we packed our bags for an overnight mother-son getaway .

How did my child find out about LEGOLAND hotels? Well he watched (too) many video tours hosted by mini-influencers on YouTube Kids showing the other eight LEGOLAND properties around the world. The LEGOLAND New York Resort is the third LEGO theme park in the United States, in addition to Florida and California, but the first (and currently the only) in the Northeast.

LEGOLAND NY is located in Goshen, New York, just 60 miles northwest of New York. From our home in Westchester County it was an easy hour’s drive, about 15 minutes outside of the Woodbury Common Outlets. From check-in to check-out we had a great experience. If you’re planning a stay at the LEGOLAND hotel in New York City, here’s what you need to know before you go.

The theme park is located right next to the hotel.

Obviously, the main draw of a stay at the LEGOLAND hotel is the 150-acre theme park right next door. The LEGOLAND experience is a full-day affair, with seven LEGO-themed lands featuring dozens of rides, shows, activities, and attractions geared towards kids ages 2-12. The park officially opens at 10am, but we got off a bit early and that day the gates were actually open at 9.45am which gave us a bit of a head start to maximize the day (a bonus to staying on the property !) .

We entered through Brick Street into Bricktopia, the land the south side of the hotel overlooks, where you’ll find plenty of rides suitable for the little ones, like a carousel and DUPLO themed train. From there, we ventured from the upper level of the theme park through the loop path that takes you through all of the lower level terrain. (Be prepared to walk and bring a refillable water bottle! The park stretches around a very hilly loop.)

There is plenty to keep the kids entertained after hours.

The park closes at 6 p.m. and it takes 10 minutes by car to get to the shops and restaurants in Goshen. That said, the hotel, which is outfitted with over 2,000 LEGO models, is literally designed as a playground for young children, so there are tons of interactive elements and activities to keep them entertained. Namely, the lobby includes a castle play area with a pirate ship and LEGO construction workstations – there is also a separate DUPLO play area for the little ones. And for parents who enjoy a cocktail or two, the hotel’s Skyline Bar is ideally located with direct view of the play areas. (The bar is open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and closes an hour or two earlier on other evenings.)

You will also find nightly entertainment in the lobby after the park closes, as well as an arcade open until 10 p.m. TBD, currently scheduled to be ready for Memorial Day holiday weekend).

There is also a lot to do in the bedrooms.

When you book your room, you will be asked to choose from one of four themes: Castle, Ninja, Pirate or LEGO Friends. But whatever theme you choose, know that the hotel’s 250 guest rooms all feature LEGO-themed wall décor. As soon as we entered our castle room, my son’s eyes lit up as he soaked up everything (see below for his “official” tour).

Kids have a separate sleeping area with bunk beds with their own TV (loaded with all the LEGO movies, natch) and loads of LEGOs to play with. There’s also an in-room scavenger hunt – follow the directions and you’ll discover the code that unlocks a safe where you’ll find a free LEGO-themed welcome gift for the kids.

Instead of phones, every room is equipped with voice-activated Google Nest that acts like a digital concierge. Just say “talk to my hotel” and you get theme park info, order more towels, or even a bedtime story is read aloud. If you have a more specific question, you can use your own mobile phone to send an SMS to a number that connects you to reception.

Even the elevator is fun.

One of our favorite features was the disco elevator. As soon as you walk in, the lights start to pulsate, the music goes off, and a mirror ball on the ceiling begins to spin. My son and I put on dance parties on every ascent and descent, which made an otherwise mundane activity an absolute blast.

The hotel has its own restaurant, but it doesn’t hurt to bring snacks too.

Your stay includes a complimentary breakfast buffet each morning at the Bricks Restaurant, just off the lobby. Open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Monday to Wednesday and from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Thursday to Sunday, you will find a hearty and delicious breakfast consisting of all the breakfasts you can imagine, from egg sandwiches to waffles to pastries and cereals. Plan to have lunch in the park, then return for a family meal at The Bricks, where dinner service begins at 5 p.m.

While you will find juice, water, coffee and tea in your hotel room, the restaurant closes between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. and there is no room service at this time. (A public relations representative for LEGOLAND New York Resort said the hotel “aims to provide this service in the future, but the timing is yet to be determined.”) That said, rooms do have mini-fridges, so if you tend to get the late night snack food, definitely bring extra snacks and drinks.

Vacation packages are available.

LEGOLAND hotel room rates start at $ 279 per night, and ticket prices start at $ 70 for one-day child admission and $ 80 for one-day adult admission. You can also opt for a vacation package, which includes a one-night stay at the LEGOLAND Hotel and two-day tickets to LEGOLAND Park, starting at $ 109 per person. And if you think you’re a regular visitor, there’s also the $ 230 Gold Pass, which includes unlimited park tours and free parking.

Plus, plan to spend at least $ 20 on parking (or $ 30 on valet parking at the hotel), plus extra for breakfasts, snacks, games, and souvenirs from the gift shop. I recommend purchasing tickets and parking in advance online or through the LEGOLAND New York Resort app, which will definitely save you time and even a little money, thanks to the purchase discounts at advance.

COVID security rules are in effect.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, LEGOLAND New York Resort is completely cashless, so be sure to bring your credit card or set up Apple Pay on your phone before you go. There’s even a contactless check-in process at the hotel, via kiosks in the lobby. While not mandatory, the resort also recommends that guests wear masks in all interior spaces (when visiting last summer, I found that some guests, but certainly not all, followed this advice. ). You can view a full list of current resort activities health and safety measures on their website, including capacity limits and enhanced cleaning regimes.

Overall my son and I had a magical experience at the LEGOLAND Hotel and can’t wait to go back to check out the other themed room experiences. If you’re looking for a great excuse to visit LEGOLAND New York Resort this fall, know that the resort Brick or spectacular treat starts October 2, with spooky entertainment, goodies, costume contests, nightly rides and more every weekend throughout the month
