Hotel review

Located on the island of Koh Lanta, which compared to most of its neighboring islands is rather laid back and less partyy, is the super luxury hotel Pimalai. The hotel is located in the southern part of Koh Lanta so it’s away from a lot of development, but that’s also a bonus as it means you can escape the crowds during high season. And if that’s not enough, there’s always the reliable moped – are you even on a Thai island if you don’t rent a moped and find a deserted beach? We think not.

Pimalai may be the fanciest hotel on the island and it has the awards cabinet to prove it. It offers a selection of villas built into the hillside or on the beach, all facing west to capture the sunset. We stayed in the Hillside Pool Villa which was unlike any villa we’ve stayed in before – actually two separate buildings with a plunge pool in between. On one side was the living room with kitchen and small bathroom and, on the other, the bedroom with a huge bathroom and a dressing room. Outside there was a large day bed overlooking the pool and two terraces each filled with different furniture.

Outside the villas you will find three restaurants, two infinity pools, a library, a private beach, a lobby, gym, spa and fitness center with basketball courts, tennis courts and bicycles for those wishing to exercise. t, preferring instead to lounge in the high-rise pool while eating mangoes, drinking coconuts and splashing through the massive ice cream menu. As for food, there is an extensive breakfast buffet, but our favorite restaurant was Rak Talay, located directly on the beachfront, which served a good amount of Thai food, including southern specialities. We ate very well here both nights enjoying fish cooked in Thai spices, papaya salads, pork larb and southern Thai curries. The setting is more romantic than ever and the service is there; in fact, the service throughout the resort is some of the best we’ve experienced anywhere in the country.

The spa is also worth a visit. It’s hidden away in the jungle, so a super tropical setting for an incredibly relaxing treatment. If you’re looking for winter sun in a place that has entertainment both inside the hotel and outside its walls, then Pimalai is a great option.
