Hotel Il Sereno Review, Lake Como, Italy

If pure, indulgent luxury in the most romantic setting is what you seek, Il Sereno on Lake Como in Italy is for you. Often touted as the most beautiful of Italy’s lakes, Lake Como already provides the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable vacation. This stunning scenery combined with the beauty and tranquility of Hotel Il Sereno takes things to a whole new level.

Despite the hotel’s decidedly modern aesthetic, the use of natural materials, such as stone, walnut, bronze and glass, allows it to remain in harmony with the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Located in the small town of Torno on the southwestern leg of the lake (Lake Como is shaped a bit like a peace sign), Il Sereno is a quiet lakeside paradise where every inch of the place Was rated as pleasing to the eye, the staff really can’t do enough for you and you won’t find a sheet out of place.

Breakfast is served in the hotel restaurant, Il Sereno Al Lago, where you can choose to sit on the outdoor terrace with panoramic views or, on windier days, you can sit behind the sheltered stone arches which perfectly frame the view of the lake and the villages on the opposite bank. Choose from a continental variety of breads, fruits, pastries, cereals, granola, yogurts, meats, cheeses and eggs as you see fit.

The restaurant is open for lunch, which offers an à la carte menu of typical Italian specialties including aubergine parmigiana and homemade ravioli.

There is also the lobby bar surrounded by a series of comfortable lounges and the outdoor terrace, the perfect place for a late afternoon aperitif or before dinner while admiring the sunset.

For dinner, return to Il Sereno Al Lago for a gastronomic experience with one of three tasting menus: “Omaggio a la tradizione”, five courses of modern Italian cuisine; ‘Contrasti’, seven dishes with contrasting flavors; and “Vegetables, Tubers and Roots”, seven dishes that put vegetables first.

Hotel Highlights

The infinity pool – surrounded by sun loungers and daybeds, the heated pool is ideal for lazy days in the sun, surrounded by the natural beauty of the lake and the Alps beyond.

Then there is the spa, where you can enjoy luxurious treatments with Valmont products – the Rejuvenate by the Lake treatment with exfoliation and full body massage will be the most heavenly 90 minutes of your life – or relax in the outdoor relaxation area (which you can reserve privately for an hour a day) with access to a hot tub, sauna and hammam.

And not to be missed is the opportunity to take one of the hotel’s Riva boats for a spin on the lake, from where you can get a unique perspective of the quaint traditional towns that line the shore (as well as trying to spot George Clooney lodge!).

What to do nearby

A trip to this part of the lake isn’t complete without a visit to Como, the lake’s largest town – here you’ll find a host of shops, restaurants, cafes and bars lining cobbled streets and a marina animated.

Lake Como

There is a decent ferry system that crosses the lake (just be aware that they tend to run on ‘Italian time’) so if you can get away from the majesty of Il Sereno be sure to visit a few charming towns and villages around the lake. For a longer day trip, ride the fast ferry across the middle of the lake and visit the idyllic towns of Belaggio and Varenna – both are worth a visit.
