Archives Portal Marks One Year Anniversary with Faster Turnaround Times and Streamlined Customer Service > Air Force > Article Display

For the past year, former and current airmen and Guardiansor those submitting on their behalf, were able to electronically request corrections to certain military records through an online portal maintained by the Air Force Review Boards Agency (AFRBA). The portal interface allows users to complete all necessary paperwork and upload supporting documents directly to a secure website, reducing case creation time from a month to a week.

Acting on behalf of secretary of defense and air force secretarythe boards and commissions that sit within the AFRBA are responsible for processing more than 7,500 claims each year for service members, civilians, veterans and their families, ensuring fairness, equity and regularity of the procedure.

Of the 10 commissions that AFRBA is working to streamline for military and civilian personnel matters, the four that can receive applications using the electronic portal submission include: the Army Commission of the for the correction of military records, the Air Force Discharge Review Board, the review of Department of Defense Discharge Appeals. Department of Defense Physical Disability Review Board and Board.

“Applicants who wish to correct an administrative error, such as time spent overseas or missing awards and decorations, or who wish to request a discharge upgrade, find the Portal a faster and more efficient alternative. to submitting applications by mail or even email.” said Cliff Tompkins, AFRBA’s Director of Mission Support. “More than 30 percent of the 4,700 applications received since last April for these four councils come from of people submitting through the portal.”

Another feature provided by the portal is a status check, which allows users with an electronic application number to receive the real-time status of their case as it moves from creation at the auction.

“Given the personal importance of these documents, timeliness is extremely important,” Tomkins said. “Submission through the portal provides a seamless data transition that allows staff to spend less time typing paper letters or emailed requests, and more time checking a case’s viability and preparing the case to meet counsel.”

Tomkins added that the portal is the most accurate online source for eligibility information and offers a series of questions to help guide users to the correct chart. Mailed and emailed submissions are still accepted for all advice.

In the near future, a portal upgrade will reduce the number of steps required for users to submit additional documents to support their case.
